Assam is the central state in the North-East Region of India and serves as the gateway to the rest of the Seven Sister States - Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Meghalaya. The climate is sub-tropical. Assam experiences the Indian monsoon and has one of the highest forest densities in India. The winter months are the best time to visit. Located south of the eastern Himalayas, Assam comprises the Brahmaputra and the Barak river valleys and the Karbi Anglong and the North Cachar Hills. With an area of 78,438 sq.km Assam currently is almost equivalent to the size of Ireland or Austria. It has a rich cultural heritage going back to the Ahom Dynasty which governed the region for many centuries before the British occupation.
Assam Tourism host an annual 'Tea Festival' in the month of November. In this festival you can taste different types of tea under one roof. The venue for the festival is 'Guwahati Tea Auction Centre', Guwahati. Sightseeing is also organised during the festival. |
