Goa is famous for its Portuguese built forts. The Terekhol Fort Goa is one of the more famous forts in the state. The fort takes its name from the River Tiracol, on whose banks it is located. The fort was built by Maharaja Sawant Bhosle, and captured by the Portuguese Viceroy Dom Pedro Miguel de Almeida in 1764. After capture by the Portuguese, the damaged fort was rebuilt.

The Tiracol Fort Goa now houses a heritage hotel. The fort has a church dedicated to St. Anthony in the premises. It is more than a century old. The church is closed to the general public. It does open occasionally for certain festivals and celebrations.

One of the best things about exploring the Tiracol Fort Goa is the breathtaking view from the ramparts. The sea stretches for miles, and the bushes far below sway gently in the breeze.

Once you are through exploring the fort, you can have a picnic on the beach. Enjoy a ferry ride from Tiracol Fort to Querim along the river. Tour the nearby town of Mapusa, famous for its weekly bazaar held every Friday. Shop for sausages, fish, pheni, and jaggery at the bazaar.
