Nainital is a glittering jewel in the Himalyan necklace, blessed with scenic natural spledour and varied natural resources. Dotted with lakes , Nainital has earned the epithet of 'Lake District' of India. The most prominent of the lakes is Naini lake ringed by hills. Nainital has a varied topography. Some of the important places in the district are Nainital, Haldwani, Kaladhungi, Ramnagar, Bhowali , Ramgarh, Mukteshwar, Bhimtal, Sattal and Naukuchiatal. Nainital’s unending expense of scenic beauty is nothing short of a romance with awe-inspiring and pristine Mother nature.

Places to See in Nainital

Naina Devi Temple: Naina Devi temple is a must visit in Nainital especially for people who seek spirituality and wish to offer their prayers to Goddess Naina. This temple is greatly visited by local devotees during religious festivals. It was originally constructed in the 15th Century during the Kushan reign.

Naini Lake: Naini Lake, a natural make of mother earth is set amidst seven mountains that surround this stagnant water pool and high peaks that almost touch the sky. Many tourists flock to view its enchanting beauty that stretches over 3.5 km and also where one can sit on the banks and enjoy a view of Sunrise up to Sunset that reflects with vibrant colours on this lake.

The Mall Road: The Mall Road is a point of union between Mallital with Tallital that makes it the busiest places in Nainital especially during peak seasons from May to end of June. Now it has been renamed as the Govind-Ballabh Pant Marg by the government.

The Flatts: The Flatts, situated on the northern side touching the lake, is the very popular spot where the worst landslip occurred in 1880 and constructed in honour of the 151 people who lost their lives. It was flattened and converted into a recreational activities area usually crowded with sports enthusiasts.

The Zoo: The Zoo is about 1 Km from the Nainital bus stand and is perched at a height of 2100 mts above sea level spanning over a large open area. Now, it has been named as the Govind-Ballabh-Pant High-Altitude Zoo.

Aerial Ropeway: Aerial Ropeway is one of the main attractions of Nainital that runs from Mallital right through to Snow view point where you get a wider view of the spectacular Himalayas including the entire town below. more about Aerial Ropeway

Governer's House: Governor's House or Raj Bhavan was built in 1899 and designed by F. W. Stevens in the traditional Victorian Gothic style also called the 'Domestic Gothic'. It was the summer residence of the Governor of the Northwest Province and now converted into an official guest house of Governor of Uttarakhand and state employees. It is a two-storied mansion.

Snow View Point: Snow View Point offers tourists with a spectacular view of the majestic Himalayan ranges and snow clad peaks like Nanda Devi, Nanda Kot and Trishul viewpoint. It is elevated at a height of 2270 mts above sea level and accessible via road by trekking 3 km uphill.

Cave Garden: Cave Gardens is the latest addition to the list of tourist attractions in Nainital located in SukhaTal which is 1 Km from Mallital just next to the Kumaon University Campus.

Hanuman Garhi: Hanuman Garhi is a spiritual place for travellers and tourists situated about 3.5 km from Nainital main bus stand and sits at a height of 1955 mts above sea level. It is easily accessible by road and a short walk suffices rather than using any other method to reach there.

Naina Peak: Naina Peak formerly know by the name of Cheena Peak is also spelled as 'China Peak' by some people. It is situated at an amazing height of 2615 mts above sea level which forms the highest point of Nainital and can be reached by enjoying a 6 km trek uphill.

Tiffin Top: Tiffin Top also popularly known as Dorothy's Seat means 'a packed light meal eaten as lunch' is situated approximately 4 km from Nainital and is set on the Aryapatta peak at 2292 mts above sea level. It is dedicated to Mrs. Dorothy Kellet, a British Painter.

Land's End: Land's End has become the main attraction of Nainital set at a height of 2120 mts above sea level that offers a good view of the nearby hills and Mountains along deep ridges and valleys. You can view the beautiful stagnant water of the Khurpatal.

Gurney House: Gurney House is the former residence of the famous Jim Corbett that sits on the opposite side of Tiffin Top on the Aryapatta peak set at 2292 mts above sea level.

Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences: Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences known as 'ARIES' in short is a 50 year old Observatory about 9 km from Nainital and situated 1 km from Hanumangarhi. This place is a must visit not only for budding scientists but also for those who may not be very good with science but are curious to know more and definite enthusiasts.

St. Johns Church: St. Johns Church is an ancient Cathedral and probably the oldest building that has stood strong even today against the test of times in Nainital. It was christened by the Bishop of Kolkata named Daniel Wilson.

Kilbury: Kilbury situated 10 km and Lara Kanta situated 6 km from Nainital are perfect tourist attractions easily accessible by road.
