Nandan Kanan Zoological Park, Bhubaneswar is a premier zoo of Orissa, India. It also contains a botanical garden and part of it has been declared a sanctuary. Nandan Kanan, literally meaning 'The Garden of Heavens' Nandankanan Zoological Park has become a member of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA). It is the first zoo in India to acquire this distinction. Having more than 240 zoos and aquaria as its members, WAZA works as a catalyst for joint conservation. WAZA membership would provide leadership and support for zoos, aquaria. Located a short distance from the heart of the capital city, Bhubaneswar, the Nandan Kanan zoo lies in the splendid environs of the Chandaka forest, along the rippling waters of the Kanjia Lake. The zoo was established in 1960 and declared open as a sanctuary and zoo in 1979. A major upgradation was done during 2000 (after the ruins caused by the infamous super-cyclone of 1999 in coastal Orissa). More than 1.7 million visitors visit Nandankanan every year.
Major Attractions
Nandan Kanan is famous for its white tiger population, the species it claims to have produced. In 1980, the first litter of white tigers were born to Deepak and Ganga, both were normal tawny tigers. Subsequent litters of white tigers have been distributed to Zoos both at home and abroad. Currently, Nandankanan is home to over 34 white tigers. Endangered species such as the Asiatic lion, three Indian crocodilians, Sangal lion-tailed macaque, Nilgiri langur, Indian pangolin, mouse deer and countless birds, reptiles and fish have been breeding successfully at Nandan Kanan. Some of the other attractions of Nandan Kanan are the 34 aquaria which are home to a large variety of fresh water fishes. The Reptile Park's cave-like entrance is guarded by a lifesize Tyrannosaurus Rex. Inside, numerous species of crocodiles, lizards, turtles and snakes share the park with natural ease. Around 42 kinds of mammals, 23 varieties of reptiles, 63 species of birds, and overall more than 1200 (as of 2005-06) wild animals coexist in the deep forest.
