Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary is located near the India-Nepal border, in the Terai area of Bahraich district in Uttar Pradesh. It covers an area of 400 km2 (150 sq mi) and was established in 1976. It is a part of the Dudhwa Tiger Reserve.
This wildlife sanctuary borders the area that fell under the jurisdiction of erstwhile landlord Thakur J P Singh and family. The beauty of this place is to be seen to be believed. Recently this wildlife sanctuary was covered in a discovery channel program that featured the last of the world's endangered 'Gharial'.
Thakur Jitendra Singh the grandson of the erstwhile landlord Sh J P Singh, appreciated the efforts put in by the discovery crew to highlight the endangered flora and fauna of the region which is deserving a prominent place in the world's wildlife map. At this young age Jitendra has in his own way helped retain the flora and fauna by actively taking interest in the forest preservation through the locals, and is on the verge of rolling out rural sustainable eco tourism to help drive the local economy that would create an incentive for the locals to preserve the rich wildlife of the region.
Aditya Narayan Singh Deo from Kharsawan who is an active wildlife conservator and is also the brother in law of Thakur Jitendra Singh, has shared his plans of opening a trust to preserve the forest and the gharials and endangered vultures which are still found in the area. There are only 150 gharials in the world that are left and a majority of them are found in this sanctuary. |
